As soon as I stopped my giddy fangirl squealing that Dancien Graves actually visited my blog AND commented, I felt I should clarify a few things about the name of my women’s clothing line name, Category Five.

First, I don’t glorify hurricanes nor do I think they are cool.

The name Category Five comes from being teased about my real name, Catrina. It was a bit surreal hearing my name associated with devastation and loss of life from Hurricane Katrina. My line was inspired by struggle we all went through as a result of it. The name of the line is something I thought a lot about and it means a lot to me.

Every time I tell someone my RL name I am always reminded of the hurricane. If there isn’t a awkward pause, there is surely a joke. A girl named Christmas, ironically enough, jokingly called me “Category Five” instead of Catrina. I was hurt at first but decided to use it for my line in a lemon/lemonade way. I think it is important that we take something negative and turn it into something positive. I live in Houston, TX and during hurricane season we live in fear EVERY YEAR. Hurricane Ike was especially devastating to Houston last year and scary as hell. Hurricane Katrina was hard on my family and the cities and states that surround Louisiana. This year typhoons are hitting the Philippines hard and you better believe that relate to and feel for them.

This year, with this name, I wanted to show that I am not… nor should anyone else be paralyzed by fear of hurricanes… or typhoons. They happen, we can’t control them and they are HARD to go through. We can, however, control how we prepare and respond. We prepare by being aware, educated and supplied. We respond by donating, reaching out, helping and being responsible.

How the name relates to fashion; look at the power of hurricane. It blows through a place and is forceful, respected and memorable. Since I’m still a new designer, that’s what I’d like the line, Category Five to become. That is also how I’d like the Category Five girl to feel; powerful and unstoppable. If hurricanes were power animals, a hurricane would be ours.
